Managing Heat in High Power LEDs to be Addressed at coolingZONE Summit in October
Keeping LEDs from overheating will be one of the hot topics addressed at the 2011 coolingZONE International Business and Technology Summit, running October 5-6 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

IOWA CITY, IA, August 21, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- At one time LED (light emitting diodes) were mainly used as indicator lights on appliances. Now, much higher-power LEDs are quickly replacing filament-type lighting in homes and on automobiles. The heat they generate is comparable to that of CPUs and other PCB-mounted components. High-power LED applications, including arrays of LEDs, need thermal management similar to other semiconductor devices. High temperatures not only degrade an LED's lifetime, but can also result in lower light or non-uniform output.
Controlling these serious heat issues will be the focus of the coolingZONE Summit engineering course "Thermal Design and Management of High Power LEDs" by Norbert Engelberts. Areas to be covered in this technical presentation include:
• Understanding Why Thermal Management is important - why thermal management is important for the design of lamps based on LEDs
• Available Cooling Solutions - participants will be exposed to best-in-class industry practices and the market available cooling for cooling of LED based lamps
• Case Studies, what is possible with good engineering - These examples will show what is possible with good engineering. With excellence in engineering, expensive cooling solutions can be avoided and lesser-cost cooling solutions can be deployed instead.
Norbert Engelberts is the director of Advanced Thermal Solutions Europe, and previously headed the Thermal Design and Environmental Testing Group for Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies (now Alcatel-Lucent). He has an extensive experience in the thermal management of LED based lighting solutions for a variety of applications, including automotive, street lighting, led replacement lamps.
The coolingZONE Summit will be held at the Royal Sonesta Hotel located on the historic Charles River that separates the cities of Cambridge and Boston. In this inspiring venue, the coolingZONE Summit gathers together thermal management experts to share their latest developments and studies, and provide a look at what's to come in electronics cooling.
