Thomas A. Rago Selected for Inclusion in "101 Industry Experts" Book
Thomas Rago specializes in oceanography for the Naval Postgraduate School
MONTEREY, CA, August 25, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Thomas A. Rago, Oceanographer at the Naval Postgraduate School, was recently featured in Cambridge Publishing's Top 101 Industry Experts book. The Top Industry Experts reveals the objectives and triumphs prominent Cambridge members have achieved to gain success. Selected from more than 400,000 executives, professionals and entrepreneurs, these exemplary leaders stay at the top of their fields by possessing unique experience and wisdom, all the while exhibiting innovation in their work.
Although Mr. Rago grew up near the water in Rhode Island, he did not at first know where his deep interest in the sciences would take him. However, once he learned about oceanography — the branch of earth science that studies the ocean and its scientific aspects — he knew he had found the topic upon which he would base his career. Now, more than 20 years later, he is a respected oceanographer at the Naval Postgraduate School. Founded in 1909 by George von Lengerke Meyer, this institution was originally established with marine engineering as the cornerstone of its curriculum. It now provides postgraduate education in business, civil engineering, naval construction, and ordnance and gunnery for military personnel.
"I have been around the water my entire life," says Mr. Rago, who completed a Bachelor of Arts in physics at Amherst College before realizing that he wanted physics to represent only one aspect of his career. When the dean of the oceanography department at the University of Rhode Island suggested that Mr. Rago take some courses in that discipline, he accepted and went on to earn a Master of Science in oceanography. He now collects and analyzes oceanographic data with the purpose of improving Navy research and underwater warfare preparedness. By reviewing physical conditions and formations in the ocean, especially movement patterns, compositional properties, and land/sea boundaries, Mr. Rago contributes to a field of study that not only yields important information about the earth, but impacts the national security of the United States.
Mr. Rago has contributed to several peer-reviewed research papers and has published numerous technical reports for the Naval Postgraduate School. Keenly aware that important technological advancements occur every day, he makes a sustained effort to keep up-to-date with those developments by retaining memberships to the American Geophysical Union — a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of the geophysical sciences — and The Oceanography Society, whose mission is to distribute knowledge of oceanography and its purpose through research and education. Mr. Rago was named a Professional of the Year in Oceanography by Cambridge Who's Who in 2010.
